Twenty years ago, Hawaii enacted a restriction on employer inquiries into applicant work histories, becoming the first state in the nation to “ban the box.” Today, there are “ban the box” restrictions in at least 11 states and 17 localities affecting private employers’ rights to inquire into and consider applicants’ employment histories, criminal records, credit histories, and more. Join attorneys from Ogletree Deakins’ Background Checks Practice Group as they provide tips for employers, including multistate employers, on best practices for meeting this compliance challenge.
