In the November 2013 issue of the New Jersey eAuthority, we reported on the Senate’s passage of a bill (S2995) expanding employment protections for pregnant women by (1) amending the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination to add pregnancy (including childbirth recovery) to the list of protected classifications, (2) prohibiting less favorable treatment of women based upon pregnancy, and (3) requiring employers to make reasonable accommodations for an employee’s pregnancy-related needs when requested by the employee upon advice of her doctor (such as bathroom breaks, periodic rest, job restructuring, assistance with manual labor, etc., but not mandating additional leave). On January 6, 2014, the bill passed in the Assembly (77-1-0) and was sent to Governor Chris Christie.

On May 12, a bill (A2629) was introduced that would modify the State Wage and Hour Law to require employers to provide an unpaid meal period of at least 30 minutes to all employees who work for more than six hours continuously, and at least a 15 minute paid rest break to employees who work for more than four hours continuously. If passed, this bill would represent a significant change in New Jersey law, which currently provides only for an unpaid 30 minute meal period to minors who work five or more hours continuously, and does not require any rest period for minors or adults.
As of April 7, 2016, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has reached the H-1B quota or “cap” limitation for fiscal year (FY) 2017. USCIS has not yet confirmed the total number of petitions received for the 65,000 “general” quota or the 20,000 “advanced degree” quota but will likely confirm the total number in the following weeks. Due to the high number of petitions received, USCIS has not yet confirmed the date it will complete its computerized random selection or “lottery” of H-1B petitions for further processing.
