Although Caroline has been an employment defense litigator for over 26 years, her true passion is assisting clients avoid litigation altogether, which she accomplishes by providing prompt, practical, business-driven advice. In 2008, Caroline left private practice and worked as the executive vice president of human resources of a national retailer with over 27,000 employees throughout the United States and Canada. That experience provided Caroline with invaluable insight into what companies value most about their outside counsel: a thorough understanding of the organization’s business realities, and the ability to manage legal challenges with advice that is business-oriented and not just compliance-driven. Since returning to private practice, Caroline has incorporated these key insights into all of her client relationships.
In concert with her active advice practice, Caroline also regularly conducts training for supervisors and managers. In addition to teaching the fundamentals of the law and best practices for avoiding both company and individual liability, Caroline focuses on coaching managers on performance management, which she views as the all-too-often overlooked keystone to creating a positive, successful workforce that meets the company’s business objectives. Caroline had the opportunity to put those skills into practice after joining Ogletree’s Portland office, where she was the Office Managing Shareholder for two years.
When litigation is unavoidable, Caroline brings a long track record of success in both state and federal court, having successfully defended clients in claims of harassment, discrimination, and retaliation based on disability, gender, pregnancy, age, whistleblowing, and public accommodation law, particularly with respect to service animals.
