Chris is an employment litigator and advisor who takes great pride in defending and assisting his local, regional, and national clients with issues both large and small.

Chris regularly works with clients in the financial, retail, and hospitality industries, with an emphasis on the strong and vibrant Pacific Northwest craft beer industry. His practice includes defending employers against discrimination and retaliation lawsuits, disability and family leave claims, sexual harassment allegations, and wage and hour complaints. Chris also has a very active and substantial practice representing numerous employers before Oregon’s Bureau of Labor & Industries (BOLI), as well as Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) field offices across the United States for a Fortune 500 hospitality client.

In addition, Chris helps his clients navigate tricky legal obstacles by drafting and revising employment policies to keep employers up-to-date with the ever-changing employment laws in Oregon. He also offers trainings for front-line supervisors and managers on how to avoid lawsuits by utilizing thorough and meaningful hiring and firing practices, as well as refresher courses on nuanced issues such as Oregon paid sick leave. When necessary to protect his client’s interests, Chris has also successfully brought enforcement actions against former employees for breaching their agreements with their employers or misappropriating trade secrets.

A craft beer enthusiast, Chris is an Associate Member of the Oregon Brewer’s Guild, and regularly writes articles about employment law issues that impact the craft beer industry. His articles are often published in Oregon Beer Growler magazine.

Chris also believes in volunteering his time to help promote the legal profession in Portland and the surrounding areas. He has served on multiple committees for the Multnomah Bar Association (Pro Bono Committee 2013-2015; Membership Committee 2016-present), and has volunteered to assist dozens of local first responders (police officers, fire fighters, EMTs) set up essential end-of-life documents in the event of a tragedy.


Experience

  • Successfully litigated a trade secrets violations lawsuit and enforced a non-solicitation agreement against client's former employees who attempted to raid client's customer lists and confidential information.
  • Secured dozens of dismissals of BOLI and EEOC discrimination charges.
  • Secured a voluntary dismissal of Plaintiff's lawsuit, with prejudice, shortly after the Plaintiff's deposition revealed the untruthful nature of Plaintiff's allegations.
  • Successfully managed the preparation for, and defense of, a multi-day EEOC inspection at client's production facility in a race and national origin discrimination case.
