Martin E. Sullivan

Martin E. Sullivan advises employers in all aspects of California and federal employment laws. In litigation, Martin’s practice primarily focuses on defending employers against individual and class action lawsuits involving wage and hour, wrongful termination, disability and protected leave, discrimination, harassment and retaliation claims.

Martin is also Co-Director of USC Gould School of Law’s Employment Mediation Program. In this role, he instructs JD and LLM students in the mediation of real employment cases brought before state and federal agencies. A mediator himself, Martin also serves as a panel mediator with the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District.

As a member of the Labor and Employment Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, Martin serves on its Saturday Seminar committee.


  • Obtained summary judgment in a defamation case brought by a long-time former employee against an international security systems company in federal court.
  • Through vigorous defense of two large property management companies, caused the plaintiff to abandon his sole-claim under the Private Attorneys General Act with no settlement payment.
  • As second-chair, represented an employment agency in a multi-week federal jury trial that produced a favorable jury verdict on the chief cause of action under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act.
  • Audited time-keeping policies and practices for a national paper company's California manufacturing facilities.
  • Designed and implemented employment policies for a large California food purveyor and its franchisees.
  • Successfully defended national media company in wage and hour suit alleging misclassification of exempt employees, resulting in settlement for a nominal amount.
  • On an ongoing basis, advise employers on employment processes, such as the interactive process, discipline, and termination.
