Monica R. Dean

Monica Dean is an associate in the Labor and Employment practice in the firm's Los Angeles office. Ms. Dean has litigation experience in federal and state courts in California and Nevada. Ms. Dean received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Davis in 2003. She went on to receive her J.D. from Arizona State Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law in 2006. Ms. Dean graduated early from college and law school.

While earning her J.D. from Arizona State Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, Ms. Dean worked in the Corporate Human Resources Department at Wells Fargo, and in the Civil Rights Division and Criminal and Litigation Advice Section of the Office of the Arizona Attorney General. In addition, she obtained an Arizona real estate license and worked as a licensed realtor on residential re-sale and new development purchases and leases. Monica is currently a licensed California Real Estate Broker.

Prior to joining Ogletree Deakins, Ms. Dean practiced various areas of civil defense litigation, including employment, construction, real estate, insurance, business and torts. With regard to her construction and real estate practice, Ms. Dean has assisted developers, subcontractors, material suppliers, real estate investors and businesses with various real estate and construction matters involving complex design and construction defects, products liability claims, construction site injuries, construction insurance coverage disputes involving CGL, OCIP, CCIP, Excess and Umbrella insurance policies, breach of construction contracts and payment disputes, foreclosure of mechanic's liens, surety and bond claims, easements and property line disputes, commercial landlord-tenant disputes, and commercial unlawful detainer actions.


Ms. Dean has defended clients against alleged violations of wage and hour laws including misclassification and meal and rest period issues. Ms. Dean has also represented clients against allegations of retaliation, discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, failure to accommodate, breach of contract and other violations of state and federal law. In addition, Ms. Dean has represented employers before various administrative agencies including the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board, the Nevada Equal Rights Commission, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Ms. Dean has also advised clients in wage and hour matters and employment best-practice issues across a variety of industries.

Ms. Dean’s recent experience includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Second-chaired bench trial in multi-plaintiff independent contractor misclassification case.
  • Drafted moving papers for successful motion to decertify class action on behalf of plumbing company.  
  • Drafted moving papers for successful motion to compel arbitration for banking and financial services company,  
  • Assisted in obtaining favorable settlements in various cases alleging discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, failure to accommodate, harassment, failure to engage, and various labor code violations.
  • Defended person most knowledgeable depositions for logistics company in wage and hour matters.
  • Obtained successful and nominal settlement of wage and hour claim before the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement for staffing company.
