In January 2014, both the Senate and Assembly introduced bills (S354 and A101) that would require all New Jersey employers to use the federal “E-Verify” system to check the employment eligibility of each new hire, within 90 days of the date of hire. The bill would establish a graduated penalty system against any employer that knowingly employs unauthorized aliens. Previous legislative attempts to mandate the use of E-Verify in New Jersey failed in the 2008, 2010, and 2012 legislative sessions.
