ST. LOUIS, MO – September 15, 2008 – Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C. (Ogletree Deakins), the nation’s third largest labor and employment law firm, is pleased to announce Burton D. Garland, Jr., has joined the firm’s St. Louis office. He will hold an of counsel position with the firm.

Mr. Garland, formerly of The Lowenbaum Partnership, LLC in Clayton, Missouri, practices all facets of labor and employment law. His employment practice includes representing clients in employment discrimination claims under Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and the various state counterparts to those federal laws. He is involved in litigating employment discrimination claims, as well as investigating and responding on behalf of management to employee claims before administrative agencies. Mr. Garland has appeared in federal and state courts and agencies throughout the U.S., and is permanently admitted to practice law in Missouri and Illinois. Mr. Garland’s labor law practice includes union avoidance, elections, objections to elections, collective bargaining, strikes and injunctions, arbitration, and unfair labor practice charges before the National Labor Relations Board. He regularly counsels and litigates issues related to non-competition, non-solicitation, and confidentiality agreements. He also advises clients on employment-related matters and on drafting personnel policies, employment contracts, severance agreements, and employee handbooks.
Mr. Garland earned his B.S.B.A. with honors from the University of Arizona in 1992. He earned his M.B.A. with honors from St. Louis University in 1995 and his law degree from Saint Louis University School of Law, also in 1995.
