Boys and Girls Club of Miami Gets a Makeover, Thanks to Ogletree Deakins and Hands On Miami

   |   Press Release

MIAMI, FL – May 13, 2009 – Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C. (Ogletree Deakins), one of the nation’s three largest labor and employment law firms, demonstrated its active commitment to the local community and to Miami youth on Wednesday, May 6, by partnering with Hands On Miami to re-paint and clean up the grounds of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami at 9475 North Kendall Drive.

More than 20 Ogletree Deakins attorneys and clients from across the U.S.—who had gathered in Miami for the firm’s 2009 Workplace Strategies Seminar—rolled up their sleeves and headed out to the Boys and Girls Club to help execute a makeover of the building and grounds. They re-painted the entire exterior of the building and two internal classrooms and also spruced up the grounds by raking leaves and spreading mulch.

“When Hands On Miami let us know of the opportunity to pitch in and help the Boys and Girls Club on North Kendall Drive, we jumped at the chance,” said David DeMaio, managing shareholder of Ogletree Deakins’ Miami office. “We put the word out to all our attorneys and clients nationwide who were about to travel to Miami for our seminar, and quickly signed up dozens of volunteers. Ogletree Deakins was grateful to Hands On Miami for the opportunity to help make a difference here in the local community.”

Commenting on Ogletree Deakins work that day, Sarah Perfetti, Corporate Social Responsibility Consulting Group Coordinator for Hands On Miami, said, “On behalf of Hands On Miami, I want to thank every Ogletree Deakins individual who participated in this fantastic day of service!  Twenty-four volunteers spent their entire day giving the Boys and Girls Club-Kendall Unit a makeover.  They added a splash of color to the exterior of the building, painted two of the interior classrooms, spread fresh mulch at the building’s entrance, raked leaves around the perimeter of the baseball fields, and played a fun game of dodge ball with 35 youth in grades 5-8.”

Hands On Miami organizes 70 corporate-service opportunities each month, offering thousands of Miamians the chance to make a difference in their community.

The Boys and Girls Club inspires and enables all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. The organization is committed to serving children from all economic levels of society.
