Fiona W. Ong partners with managers and human resources to help them balance the needs of employers with the rights of employees in order to achieve business success. She defends employers against claims of employment discrimination and harassment, wrongful discharge and other torts, and wage and hour violations, before federal and state agencies and in mediation. She also advises managers and human resources on a wide variety of personnel matters, including leave, reasonable accommodation, discipline, discharge, and reductions in force. She provides training on discrimination, harassment, accommodation, and other compliance issues for both managers and employees. Fiona prepares employee handbooks, personnel policies, and employment agreements. In addition, she conducts investigations into employee complaints and allegations of misconduct.
Fiona represents clients of all sizes in many different industries. She has helped managers navigate tricky leave and accommodations situations, provided guidance on how to performance-manage and gracefully exit problematic employees, and negotiated executive contracts and severance agreements. She has conducted complex investigations into wide-ranging employee complaints, including at the C-Suite level. She has aggressively defended employers against statutory and tort claims before agencies and in court.
An experienced and prolific writer and speaker, Fiona is the primary author of “Chambers Global Practice Guide – Employment – U.S. Trends and Developments” and “Chambers USA Regional Practice Guide – Employment – Maryland,” as well as the USA chapter for Legal 500’s “Employment & Labour Law Country Comparative Guide” and Lexology’s “Employment USA 2024 – Maryland.” In addition, Fiona has co-authored articles for Law360, the ABA’s Torts and Insurance Practice’s “The Brief,” the Maryland State Bar Association Journal, the Matthew Bender monthly “Labor and Employment Law Bulletin,” and other industry publications. She was the revisions editor for “The Employment Law Deskbook” and “Labor and Employment Law Volume 10 General Employment Issues,” published by Matthew Bender, and was also the editor of the “Maryland Human Resources Manual,” a publication of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce and HRSimple.com. She has spoken at national and international conferences, including for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, the Fashion Law Institute, and the Maryland State Bar Association, and has conducted webinars for numerous organizations including the Federal Bar Association, HR Simple, the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, and the Employment Law Alliance.
