Jim Murphy has represented and advised management clients in labor and employment matters for 30 years. Currently, he is the Office Managing Shareholder of the firm’s Washington office and a member of the firm’s Management Committee. Prior to joining Ogletree Deakins, Jim held positions as chief labor and employment counsel and as senior counsel for labor and employment for two of the world’s largest defense contractors. As a former corporate counsel, Jim worked side-by-side with business leaders and understands the importance of providing practical advice and workable solutions that achieve client objectives.
Jim advises and represents clients in multiple industries, including technology, broadcasting, aerospace and defense, entertainment, retail, transportation, and manufacturing. He is frequently called upon to advise clients on highly sensitive personnel actions involving alleged wrongdoing by company officials and to handle internal investigations into allegations of harassment and retaliation. Jim is also a strategic legal advisor to local and national clients with respect to employee relations, executive separations, wage and hour matters, workforce reorganizations, internal investigations, employee classification, contract labor practices, union organizing, and labor relations. Over his career, Jim has developed expertise with the unique employment law challenges affecting federal contractors, including federal ethics laws, executive orders, and “revolving door” hiring procedures for recruiting and hiring federal officials.
Jim has extensive experience defending employers in litigation in the courts of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia, as well as before FMCS and AAA arbitrators on labor disputes and employment claims. He often defends clients before the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the National Labor Relations Board, the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights, and the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights. Jim began his career as a labor and employment lawyer in the Washington office of an international law firm, where he advised and represented clients in collective bargaining, Department of Labor investigations, NLRB hearings, union organizing campaigns, and class and collective actions.
Jim is a long-time member of the American Employment Law Council and the Labor and Employment section of the American Bar Association.
