James J. Murphy

Office Managing Shareholder   |   Washington, D.C.

Jim Murphy is Co-Chair of the firm’s Government Contracting & Compliance practice and the Office Managing Shareholder for our Washington office.  He has represented and advised employers of all sizes in workplace law and litigation matters for over 30 years, including more than a dozen years in senior positions at two Fortune 100 companies in the aerospace and defense industry.  Jim’s clients include federal contractors, nonprofit organizations, and colleges & universities, as well as public and privately held businesses in technology, banking, healthcare, aerospace, defense, space, manufacturing, transportation, media, and radio.

Jim’s practice includes both litigation and non-litigation matters.  He frequently conducts internal investigations and advises organizations in response to whistleblower reports and internal allegations of management wrongdoing.  Jim also counsels employers regarding day-to-day labor relations, collective bargaining, and union election campaigns, and serves as defense counsel for employers in federal court litigation, arbitrations, and hearings and proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board, the EEOC, the U.S. Department of Labor, the D.C. Office of Human Rights, and the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights.

A significant portion of Jim’s practice includes providing strategic advice on human resources policies and practices and the protection of proprietary information, customer relationships, and goodwill. He also helps employers navigate employee complaints and disputes, adverse impact risk, pay practices, executive separations, leave and accommodation requests, workforce reductions and reorganizations, worker misclassification issues, and obligations under the Fair Labor Standards Act and state wage payment laws.  He has deep experience with workplace investigations and with the myriad obligations that federal contractors face under federal ethics laws and regulations that govern the hiring of federal officials and personnel.

Jim has been inducted as a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, is recognized by Best Lawyers, and is a long-time member of the American Employment Law Council and the Labor and Employment Law section of the American Bar Association.
