Additional Minimum Wage Increase in Mexico to Take Effect April 1

For purposes of determining the minimum wage, Mexico is divided into two geographical areas: Zone “A” and Zone “B.”

On March 25, 2015, Mexico’s National Minimum Wage Commission (CONASAMI) approved an increase to the general minimum wage for Zone “B.” The new daily minimum wage rate for Zone “B,” which goes into effect on April 1, 2015, will be MXP (Mexican Peso) $68.28. The daily minimum wage rate for Zone “A” will not be affected, remaining at MXP $70.10.

An additional minimum wage increase in Zone “B” is expected in October of this year, in order to have the same general and professional minimum wage nationwide.

As we noted in our December 23, 2014 issue of the International eAuthority, along with the new “Law of Account Unity” (which disassociates the payment of penalties and government fees from the minimum wage), this is another step towards a considerable minimum wage increase.

It is important to take this into consideration, since it is likely that labor unions will start requesting higher salary increases when reviewing their collective bargaining agreements.
