On December 11, 2015, the Council of Representatives of the National Minimum Wage Commission, pursuant to a vote to determine the minimum wage held every year, unanimously decided to increase the daily minimum wage by 4.2 percent in 2016.
The new minimum wage will be effective as of January 1, 2016. The rate will be set at MXP $73.04 (seventy three pesos) per day for every worker in the Mexican Republic, regardless of where they provide their services.
The constitutional reform published this year regarding indexing the minimum wage—which prevents the minimum wage from being used as a reference unit regarding prices, processes, penalty fees, taxes, inflation, and benefit references—constituted a momentous step to recover Mexican workers’ purchasing power.
