Under current law, discrimination on the basis of familial status is prohibited under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (NJLAD) only in housing. On November 18, 2013, the Assembly introduced a bill (A4465) amending the NJLAD to add “familial status” to the list of protected classifications for unlawful employment practices. An identical bill (S3067) was introduced in the Senate on December 5, 2013. Both bills have been referred to their respective Judiciary Committees.
