Recent legislative changes are poised to revolutionize the labor and employment landscape of Virginia. These changes, which may have been overshadowed by pandemic-related coverage, went into effect on July 1, 2020, and they increase the risk of liability for employers that fail to be proactive and update their policies and practices. In this webinar, the speakers will discuss these important changes, including: the Virginia Values Act, which amends the state’s primary anti-discrimination statute to add sexual orientation and gender identity as protected categories; the addition of a private cause of action for violation of the Virginia Wage Payment Act; the creation of a right for some public-sector employees to bargain collectively; a tiered increase in the state minimum wage beginning in 2021; and the creation of an independent cause of action for worker misclassification.
