T. Scott Kelly Appointed Committee Director for ABA’s Young Lawyers Division

BIRMINGHAM, AL – June 9, 2009 – The Birmingham office of Ogletree Deakins is pleased to announce that attorney T. Scott Kelly has been appointed as a Committee Director for the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division (YLD). Previously, Mr. Kelly, a shareholder in Ogletree Deakins’ Birmingham office, held the position of Chair of the YLD’s Labor and Employment Law Committee.

In his role as Committee Director, Mr. Kelly will be responsible for coordinating and communicating with ABA Section young lawyer groups to understand their function and provide joint programming and planning; coordinating all YLD fellowships to ensure they are administered in a consistent manner; supervising corresponding Committee Chairs and Division Liaisons and working to produce written content for the YLD’s website, relevant e-newsletters, and other publications; ensuring that Committees and Liaisons are actively participating in public and member service projects; and improving working relationships between YLD Committees and corresponding ABA entities. Mr. Kelly’s term will run from August 1, 2009 to August 7, 2010.

As a shareholder in Ogletree Deakins’ Birmingham office, Mr. Kelly represents employers in employment-related litigation on federal, state, and local levels before court and administrative agencies, regarding claims of discrimination, harassment, wrongful discharge, and wage and hour violations (including collective actions).  A significant amount of Mr. Kelly’s practice is devoted to representing federal contractors and sub-contractors in compliance evaluations and administrative enforcement actions triggered by the United States Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP). He also regularly provides counseling to employers on matters of employee discipline and termination, enforcement and implementation of employment policies, and workplace investigations.   Mr. Kelly is a frequent speaker on these topics.   

Mr. Kelly earned his B.A. degree from Birmingham-Southern College in 1996 and his law degree from Cumberland School of Law, Samford University in 2000.
