J. Howard Daniel

Mr. Daniel began his legal career in 1976 as an associate at Haynsworth, Baldwin, Johnson and Greaves, a regional labor and employment firm.  He served as Managing Partner of that firm for three years, including overseeing the merger of the firm with its 7 offices and 47 attorneys with Ogletree Deakins in September 2004. Since that time, Mr. Daniel has served on Ogletree’s Compensation Committee, and from 2007-2012 served on Ogletree’s five-member Board of Directors.

Mr. Daniel’s practice is diverse and he is known by his clients for extreme responsiveness and practical approach to issues. He spends a significant amount of time enabling clients to bring vision and strategic direction to their human resource and legal needs. Mr. Daniel’s background in managing law firms as well as serving as chair of not for profit entities such as the Greenville Chamber with over 2400 corporate members and the S.C Governors School for Science and Mathematics Foundation has given him the opportunity to look at clients’ problems from a broad perspective.

Mr. Daniel’s focus on the client has been recognized by the firm and he has led and/or participated in internal programs to train Ogletree lawyers on client relationships and service. His course “Clients, Quotes and Clichés” is taught twice a year during orientation to all new Ogletree lawyers regardless of how long the lawyer has practiced. He manages portfolio relationships with a number of clients with the goal of increasing efficient delivery of legal services while enhancing quality. Mr. Daniel brings a value added approach to each client relationship.

Mr. Daniel is serving as Founding Board Chair of the European American Chamber of Commerce-Carolinas an organization that promotes and facilitates trade and investment between the US and Europe.

In addition, Mr. Daniel co-manages Ogletree Deakins relationships with EPLI carriers.

Mr. Daniel has managed and/or handled labor and employment issues for clients in over 40 states. Mr. Daniel travels extensively to work face to face with clients on strategic issues. The variety of issues Mr. Daniel has handled or managed for clients run the full spectrum including:

  • Represented clients in over 100 certification or decertification elections
  • Negotiated dozens of labor agreements and handled accompanying arbitrations
  • Managed the labor and employment aspects of due diligence on numerous acquisitions, including working as coordinating council on these issues with some of the nation’s largest and most prestigious corporate law firms
  • Tried numerous NLRB ULP trials including a 6 day trial in Brooklyn in 2013 before the NLRB resulting in a total win and dismissal of the charges by the NLRB
  • Assisted management in developing and successfully implementing a plan to alleviate the threat of contempt or other unusual remedies for a new client that had a history of labor law violations
  • Manages strategy and risk assessment on hundreds of EEO and other litigation matters for a variety of clients.
