RALEIGH, N.C. – July 13, 2017 – Ogletree Deakins, one of the largest labor and employment law firms representing management, is pleased to announce that shareholder Tom Farr has been nominated by President Donald J. Trump to serve as a District Court Judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina. Farr was previously nominated for the position in 2006 by President George W. Bush, where he received the highest rating for fitness for the bench given by the American Bar Association.
Farr has tried cases in federal and state courts in North Carolina and has handled appeals at all levels of the North Carolina appellate courts, the Fourth and Sixth Circuit Courts of Appeal, and the U.S. Supreme Court. His cases have been wide ranging in the labor and employment field and he’s worked specifically on Occupational Safety and Health Administration, sexual harassment, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claims, breach of contract, National Labor Relations Board, racial discrimination, and constitutional law.
Prior to entering private practice in 1983, he was an attorney with the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation; counsel to the U.S. Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee; and law clerk to the Honorable Frank W. Bullock, Jr., Chief Judge for the United States District Court, Middle District of North Carolina. He also served as Adjunct Professor of Labor and Employment Law at Campbell University School of Law from 1990 through 1995.
He will have a confirmation hearing before the United States Senate Judiciary Committee, who will then make a recommendation to the Senate prior to a vote being taken.
Farr is a member of the American Bar Association, North Carolina Bar Association, U.S. Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit (Judicial Council, Permanent Member), and permanent member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference. He has been a Chambers USA rated lawyer since 2004, was named to the College of Labor and Employment Attorneys in 2016 and is A-V rated by the Martindale Hubbell Law Directory. He earned his LL.M. in labor law from Georgetown University and his J.D. from Emory University. He’s also a 1976 graduate of Hillsdale College and a 1972 graduate of Oak Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.
