With only about a year to go until the European Union’s (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) takes effect, employers must begin preparing now for this complex new data privacy legislation. The GDPR becomes effective on May 25, 2018, and employers that are not in full compliance on the effective date will be subject to severe penalties. The GDPR requirements for human resources data regarding notice, data breach notification, consent, and an individual’s access to data are significantly broader and stricter than the requirements of current national data protection laws. The GDPR also requires employers to follow the data protection and employment requirements of each EU Member State. Join attorneys from Ogletree Deakins’ Data Privacy Practice Group as they answer key questions about the new regulations and discuss best practices for preparing to comply with the law.
